This guy makes de Blasio look like Ronald Reagan; the most radical left of a major party candidate in a big jurisdiction. This is something beyond the destruction that New York City has already seen.
Gov. Ron DeSantis (on Zohran Mamdani)
Those poor New Yorkers: mad-liberal Democrats have nominated socialist Zohran Mamdani to be their party’s candidate in this fall’s mayoral election. The Wall Street Journal credits his rise to “the same economic discontent that powered Mr. Trump’s rise.” What a load of horse manure, because Trump would never promise what Mamdani has:
- Huge tax increases on corporations and millionaires
- Cancel personal debts
- Freeze rents
- Free childcare
- Free rides on city buses
- Open five city-owned wholesale commissaries
- Double hourly minimum wage to $30
Mamdani hopes to create what his fellow socialist, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, calls an “opportunity economy” (a euphemism for tax-payers enabling underachievers and rewarding bad behavior), when history says he’ll end up with a city-state akin to Cuba, Laos and North Korea; three of the poorest countries in the world.
By giving free stuff to low-earners and raising taxes on high-earners, New York will import low-producers and export high-producers; thereby creating a bankrupt mediocracy. Even before the specter of Mamdani, Fortune reported that New York City lost 12% of its millionaires in the first half of 2024, and Bloomberg estimated annual budget deficits of at least $5 billion from 2026 to 2029. Socialism is New York’s ticket to ruin because…
…the winners who “make it there” can “make it anywhere,” and Charlotte, Dallas and south Florida beckon (with no income taxes). Since 2020, 546,000 New Yorkers have taken $36.1 billion in taxable income and fled the city, creating a $26.3 billion budget shortfall the last five years (source: New York Post). That’s bad for Gotham, and maybe worse for the Democrat Party, because…
….that exodus dooms Democrats in 2032, when the liberal Brennan Center predicts the 2030 census shifts at least 12 electoral votes to 6 red states (AZ, FL, ID, NC, TX, UT); meaning a Democrat can win the Blue Wall (MI, PA, WI) and still fall 12 electoral votes short of the 270 needed to win the presidency (one reason Democrat James Carville says Mamdani’s mayoral nomination is a “troubling event” for his party).
No question, Mamdani holds “troubling” positions. His campaign website promises to “shift the tax burden to more expensive homes in richer and whiter neighborhoods.” He told NBC News, “I don’t think we should have billionaires.” For 18 months, he’s screamed “globalize the intifada” at anti-Israel rallies (not a good look in a city of 1,300,000 Jews). Tough talk that belies his inner weasel.
Challenged by The Bulwark, Mamdani said he borrowed the term “intifada” from the Holocaust museum, eliciting a rebuke from the US Holocaust Museum: “exploiting the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising to sanitize ‘globalize the intifada’ is outrageous and especially offensive to survivors. Since 1987, Jews have been murdered under its banner.” On Friday, the Times outed him for checking both the “Asian” and “African-American” boxes on his application to Columbia. Oops!
Mamdani has all the markings of a Kamala Harris candidacy, starting with his win over now-toxic Andrew Cuomo in a low-turnout primary, in which only 20% (1,026,783) of the city cast ranked-choice votes. Fact: Mamdani won only 43.5% (446,163) of first-round votes. Fact: his 545,000 votes in the final round weren’t even 11% of the city’s enrolled voters. Fact: Dems presume victory because 65% of the city’s voters are Democrats.
Except then-Democrat Eric Adams won 67% of the vote in 2022 and is the incumbent mayor. Except Mamdani did well in the primary with Asians, Hispanics and Whites; who all shifted toward Trump last November. Except Blacks comprise 25% of the city’s 4.7 million registered voters. It’s not hard to envision an America First coalition coalescing around Eric Adam’s Independent campaign.
Adams will win most of the city’s 1,349,670 Black voters, right? No way Momdani wins the city’s 1,537,803 Trump-2024 voters, or a rabid Islamist wins the city’s 546,000 Jews. That adds up to 3,443,473 anti-Mamdani votes in an electorate of 4.7 million (source: NYCCRC). Of course, he could win, but New York’s silent majority are probably frightened by Mamdani’s ideas.
Especially now, when New York’s debt is $136.8 billion, and Mamdani’s already squabbling with the President about DEI and ICE on social media. Trump’s got three more years, and is not afraid to withhold federal funds for non-compliance with federal laws. Why risk it? Because the Big Apple will rot without federal funds.
Zohran Mamdani – aren’t New Yorkers too smart to bet their futures on his socialist experiments? Let’s hope so.
